Overview

Kınalıada – Island of Red Hills & Simple Life

Discover the unique charm of Kınalıada, the closest and sunniest of the Princes’ Islands, on this enjoyable full-day island walk. Known for its reddish hills, open landscapes, and beautiful sea views, Kınalıada offers a different atmosphere from the more forested islands nearby.

After arriving on the island, we begin with a relaxed stroll through the lively waterfront and neighborhood streets, followed by a guided hike across the island’s gentle hills and coastal paths. Along the way, you’ll enjoy wide views of the Marmara Sea, quiet residential lanes, and the distinctive red-colored terrain that gave the island its name.

FAQ

Kınalıada is a delicate ecosystem with limited resources. Our tour focuses on low-impact exploration to preserve the island’s quiet character and natural beauty.

To help make the visit sustainable, please:

  • Stick to the Trails: Avoid trampling wild flora; the island’s vegetation is sparse and slow to recover.
  • Zero Waste: Use reusable water bottles and ensure all trash is carried back to the mainland or disposed of in settlement bins.
  • Support the Island Economy: Our coffee breaks and stops focus on small, locally-run businesses.
  • Respect the Silence: Keep noise levels low near residential areas to maintain the peaceful atmosphere the islands are known for.
  • Mindful Travel: Using the public ferry and walking is the most carbon-efficient way to experience the Prince Islands.
  • Public Transportation: Meet at the Mavi Marmara Islands Pier in Sirkeci, easily reached via the T1 Tram or Marmaray (Sirkeci stop).
  • Terrain: Unlike other islands, Kınalıada has very little shade. The hike involves uphill climbs on unpaved, sometimes rocky paths.
  • Physical Effort: A moderate level of fitness is required for the full-day hike. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility aids.
  • Island Transit: There are no cars on the island; while electric shuttles exist in the village, our route is strictly walking-based.
  • Meet with your guide at 08:30 at Islands Pier in Kabataş
  • Ferry Crossing: Depart from Kabataş, enjoying views of the city skyline as you head to the smallest of the inhabited Prince Islands.
  • Geological Hike: A guided trek across the island’s open hills, focusing on its distinctive red soil and sparse, wild vegetation.
  • Historical Insight: Stops to discuss the island’s diverse history, its former quarries, and its unique role within the Armenian community.
  • Coastal Viewpoints: Plenty of pauses at high-altitude spots to take in panoramic views of the Marmara Sea and the distant city.
  • Settlement Walk: A gentle closing walk through the quiet residential streets, observing the charming architecture and resilient island lifestyle.
  • Car-Free Islands: One of the most delightful things about the Princes’ Islands is the peaceful atmosphere created by the absence of cars. With no traffic noise, visitors move around on foot or by bicycle, enjoying the calm streets and the relaxed island pace.
  • Charming Historic Architecture: The islands are filled with beautiful old buildings. As you wander the streets, you’ll see elegant Ottoman mansions, colorful wooden houses, and historic churches, monasteries, and mosques that tell the story of the islands’ past.
  • Beautiful Natural Scenery: The Princes’ Islands are surrounded by lush forests, olive groves, and clear blue waters. Shaded paths and coastal views make them perfect for enjoyable walks, scenic hikes, and moments of quiet connection with nature.
  • A Refreshing Escape from the City: For many Istanbul residents, the islands are the perfect getaway from the busy city. People come here to relax, breathe fresh sea air, and enjoy a slower rhythm of life.
  • Distinct Island Characters: Each island has its own personality. Büyükada is known for its grand mansions and lively streets, Heybeliada for its historic religious sites like the Halki Seminary, while Burgazada and Kınalıada offer a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere.
  • Elegant Summer Retreats: In the 19th century, the islands became popular summer escapes for Istanbul’s elite and foreign diplomats. Many of the beautiful wooden villas from that time still stand today, adding charm and history to the landscape.
  • Outdoor Fun and Exploration: With their peaceful roads and natural beauty, the islands are perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, swimming, and simply enjoying the scenery.
  • A Creative Cultural Scene: The islands also host small art exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events that attract artists and visitors who appreciate creativity in a relaxed island setting.

Prince Island Hiking routes is a project which was created by the Istanbul Chamber of Guides (IRO) in coordination with Istanbul Tourism Platform, a body of IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality). The Monumental Trees content was provided by the IMM Directorate of Parks, Gardens, and Green Areas, and the cultural heritage content by the IMM Cultural Heritage Department.

As part of our sustainable tourism efforts, we aim to minimize the negative impact of visitor density on natural life and tranquility in the Islands. Our goal is to protect their natural beauty and maintain the cultural fabric.

To make tourism on the Islands sustainable and ensure the continuity of natural areas, please:

  • Avoid behaviors that could harm trees, flowers, other plants, and animals.
  • Refrain from playing loud music, shouting, and other similar actions to maintain silence in the surroundings.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding unnecessary plastic packaging and making sure to dispose of your packaging waste in recycling stations.
  • Remember the presence of the people living here during your visits and interact harmoniously with other visitors and the local community.

This trip is enjoyable most of the year , as each season offers its own unique charm. However, summer months tend to be too warm and to crowded, that we recommend to avoid this experience particularly in July and August.
