Great Palace Mosaics Museum & Mosaic Workshop
Most visitors to Istanbul walk right past one of its best-kept secrets — a museum tucked behind the Hippodrome, full of 1,500-year-old floor mosaics that once covered the floors of a Byzantine imperial palace. Lions, hunters, children playing, animals mid-chase — all frozen in tiny pieces of stone and still remarkably vivid.
This experience gives you the full picture: a guided visit to the museum, a proper look at what these mosaics actually depict and how they were made, and then a hands-on workshop where you have a go yourself. You’ll leave with your own small mosaic to take home — and a story about it that’s a lot more interesting than “I bought this at the corner shop.”

Sustainability Note
As part of our responsible travel approach, this experience focuses on the respectful interpretation of Istanbul’s archaeological heritage while supporting the continuity of traditional craftsmanship. The aim is to connect participants with the historical and cultural value of the mosaics while minimizing impact on the site and contributing to the local artisan community.
To help make the visit sustainable, please:
Respect archaeological heritage: The Great Palace Mosaics are fragile remains of a 6th-century Byzantine palace. Follow museum guidelines, avoid touching surfaces, and maintain a respectful distance from protected areas.
Travel lightly: The museum is located within Istanbul’s historic peninsula and can be reached on foot or by public transport, reducing environmental impact while allowing visitors to experience the historic fabric of the city.
Support living craftsmanship: The mosaic workshop works with local artisans who continue traditional techniques. Participation helps sustain small craft studios and the transmission of heritage skills.
Small-group format: Visits and workshops are organized for small groups to ensure a calm museum environment and meaningful interaction with the artisan instructor.
Mindful use of materials: Workshops emphasize careful use of tesserae and tools, reflecting the patience and precision required in traditional mosaic making.
Responsible conduct: Keep noise low in the museum, respect other visitors, and dispose of any workshop waste responsibly.
By approaching both the archaeological site and the workshop with care and curiosity, participants help support the preservation of Byzantine heritage and the continuity of traditional mosaic craftsmanship in Istanbul.
